Hehe. That’s awesome. I used to teach in Puerto Rico. I wouldn’t want to be teaching in San Diego. Searching for reliable wind for lessons here would be terrible. The only lesson out of the whole class I would do here would be the “ground control” lesson. But the person doesn’t even get in the water for that one! All in all, lessons were about $100 per hour all inclusive, each lesson being 2 hours long. On average, it would take 6 hours (3 separate days, 2 hour lessons) to get someone riding on a board. Absolute minimum for the fast learners and athletic type is about 4 hours. -D

Hahaha! Liz, that’s too funny. The funniest thing is I can hear the Brit accent too. Even though I’ve never heard you speak. I am close to upside down but not all the way. Not for this trick at least. But, getting upside down mid-air is not so hard either. Also, to downplay it a bit… I’m going maybe 15 miles per hour and I just left a wave, rather than intending to land on one. (Which will probably not work to my advantage in this case.) Again. YOU ARE NOT OLD. I’ve taught old people to kite. And well, like I said, you don’t fall into that category. -D

Hi Danny – Look – I’ll be straight with you. I am too old to go kite-boarding. It looks well scary. I do believe you are upside down in that photo, with your head hurtling at 60 miles per hour towards a wave (possibly with embedded shark, jellyfish . . .). I shake in my boots when I see the Poseidon Adventure. Respect.

Hi María, thanks Those were the Maui days. I miss ‘em. The photo that made the Westways cover was not this exact shot. It was during this same session, but a different trick. That’s why I didn’t add it to the post. But, maybe I should add it. Cheers, Danny

Wow Danny, I had no idea you were so gnarly!!!! Great photo. Almost makes me want to kiteboard, although I’d probably kill myself. You should also post the photo of the Westways mag that featured this shot. I’m sure I probably saw it – I get that magazine.
